Getting to the University

The city of Richmond is easily accessible to major routes of transport. Richmond International Airport (RIC) is served by USAir, Delta, United, Continental, and American Airlines. Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington D.C. is one of the major international airports receiving daily international flights. Richmond is 2 hours by ground transportation from Dulles and there are additional travel times and costs associated with transportation from Dulles to Richmond that often make flying into RIC more convenient.

We strongly encourage flying into Richmond International Airport (RIC) when possible as we cannot make pick-ups outside the Richmond area for students arriving for international orientation.

By Air

Richmond is serviced by Richmond International Airport. If you fly into Richmond, go to the Groome Transportation booth located outside the baggage claim area. You may purchase tickets there to the University.

If flying into Washington, D.C., Greyhound offers a connecting service from Dulles Airport via Washington to the Greyhound Bus Station in Richmond. Once in DC, students must transfer to a bus going to Richmond. Taxi service from the bus station in Richmond to the University.

Additionally, Washington Flyer bus company has a shuttle from Dulles Airport to Union Station in Washington, D.C. where one can take a train to Richmond. The bus runs every hour daily except Saturdays. For more information, call toll-free in the U.S. 1-888-WASH-FLY. For a train schedule to Richmond, consult Amtrak's website.

Dulles International Airport is located about 45 minutes from National Airport. Washington Flyer shuttle bus service between Dulles and National Airport operates hourly. Fare and schedule information is located at the Washington Flyer desk next to the baggage claim area. You will need to take the Flyer bus to Dulles Airport.

By Bus

Bus service is offered to Richmond by Greyhound Trailways. Fare and schedule information is available from their local business offices. You may locate this information by calling 411 or the operator (dial 0) on a public telephone and by using the telephone book. In major cities, transportation information is available at the Travel Assistance Desk in the airport.

By Train

Amtrak is the passenger rail company in the United States. Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) has a rail station with free shuttles from the airport terminal. Train service to Richmond is available from major cities. Call 1-800-872-7245 (or 1-800- USA-RAIL) for fare and schedule information. Daily train service is offered from Washington, D.C. to Richmond. Tain station (Union Station) in Washington, D.Co get to the tr. from National Airport, take the metro (subway) or a taxi to Union Station.
Once you arrive in Richmond, you will need to take a taxi to the campus.

Getting around the City of Richmond

The University campus is located in a suburban area 6 miles from downtown Richmond. The campus is relatively small and self-contained. Downtown Richmond is accessible through the public bus system which has a bus stop at the front gate of the campus.

Spider Shuttle

The Spider Shuttle run by Student Activities is FREE service available to all UR students, faculty, and staff. The shuttle goes to nearby shopping areas, including Ukrop's grocery store and First Market Bank. The shuttle leaves from the lower level entrance of the Tyler Haynes Commons and runs Thursday through Saturday. For a schedule, click on the Student Activities website below:

Greater Richmond Transport Company

It is worthy to note that Richmond public transportation is not as regular or convenient as in other countries and large cities.

City Buses: The Greater Richmond Transit Company offers bus service in the city both weekdays and weekends with some exceptions. The fare is $1.25 within the city. Exact change is required on the buses. Schedules of bus routes and times are available upon request by calling 358-GRTC/4872. Discounted bus tickets can be purchased at the University bookstore.

Taxis: Phone numbers may be found under "Taxicabs" in the yellow pages of the telephone directory.

Airport Limousine: Groome Transportation provides limousine service to and from Richmond airport. For additional information, please call 222-7222.

Rented Cars: If you need an automobile for a short period of time (a few days or a weekend), you may wish to rent one. Check the yellow pages of the telephone directory under "Automobile Renting and Leasing" for a list of local rental agencies. Rates vary according to the make of car, the number of days used, and the number of miles driven. Drivers must be at least 21 years of age.
