In your selection of courses, keep in mind that you may select courses outside of your field of study. The University of Richmond is a liberal arts institution, which means that students are required to take classes in various disciplines in order to graduate. The University of Richmond does not have any restrictions as to the undergraduate classes you may take as long as you have the required prerequisites for advanced level courses. Graduate courses often require departmental approval. You need to check with the academic advisor at your home institution as to what courses you need to take while at Richmond.

Because of the differences in educational systems, it is advisable that students take no more than 4 courses during the first semester. If you need to take 5 courses, we suggest doing this only in your second semester of studies at Richmond. 3.5 units is the minimum full time load requirement for undergraduates and 5.5 units is the maximum (1 unit is equivalent to 3.5 semester hours). Most undergraduate students enroll in 4 or 5 units each semester. Further information regarding the credit and registration system will be explained during International Student Orientation.

If I am an accepted student coming to UR from a partner university, how will I register for courses?

The course schedule is available from the Registrar's office one week prior to the beginning of the academic advising period. At that time, you will receive a Registration Email For Accepted Students message with instructions on viewing courses on offer for the upcoming semester. You must select your courses from the course schedule and not from the Richmond catalog as not all courses in the catalog are offered each semester. Some academic departments list their projected courses on their website. These projected courses are not guaranteed and are subject to change. Please understand that although we do publish the course schedule in advance, the syllabi with information about texts and course material are not available until the first day of class.

Registration begins one week after the academic advising period. If you are accepted after the registration period, you will still receive the Registration Email For Accepted Students message so that you can indicate your course preferences. Please refer to the academic calendars on the Registrar's website for advising and registration periods.

Make sure you have met with your academic advisor at your home institution to discuss your proposed schedule.

How can I arrange for my University of Richmond transcript to be sent to my home institution?

Since it is mandatory for all exchange students to have an official University of Richmond transcript mailed to their home institution, completion of the transcript authorization form is required. The Registrar's office mails transcripts the 2nd week in May after the spring semester and the first week in January after the fall semester.
