Measurement Activities
For activities on length
try out:
-
Metric Me
- Have somebody trace your body. Then measure each part of your body and
label its length in centimeters. After it's all filled in you can decorate
your picture!
-
Smile Metric Style
- Measure the smiles of all the students in your class. Record, compare,
and add them up to see how happy your class is!
For dealing with mass
take a look at the following suggested activities:
-
Search your house (or classroom) for
objects that weigh either 1 milligram, 1 gram, 1 kilogram, 1 pound, etc.
Then measure your findings to see how accurately you can estimate mass!
For learning more about
volume,
try this idea:
-
Find objects around your house that
measure 1 ounce, 1 cup, 1 pint, 1 quart, 1 gallon, and 1 liter.
For practice with telling
time
try the following activities:
-
There are some fun software programs
like, Clock Shop and Trudy's
Time and Place House.
-
Try playing the game, Time
on My Hands. Go to the GAME!
-
For students who need extra help with
telling time, or for students who just want more practice, try downloading
a Power Point presentation on time. Click

When dealing with temperature,
keep a weekly record of the temperature of each day of this month. Go out
early in the morning, read the thermometer, and record its reading. Watch
for any patterns that develop or try to predict the upcoming weather.
For an activity that combines length,
mass,
and volume, try the following:
-
Go on a scavenger hunt through your
house and backyard and fill in a chart with the headings: Length, Mass,
Volume. Under Length, find objects that represent 1 inch, 1 foot, 1 yard,
1 millimeter, 1 centimeter, 1 decimeter, 1 meter, and 1 kilometer. Under
Mass, find objects that represent 1 milligram, 1 gram, 1 kilogram, and
1 pound. And under Volume, find objects for 1 milliliter, 1 liter, 1 ounce,
1 cup, 1 pint, 1 quart, and 1 gallon.
