On The Prowl

~The Sneaky Side of Camouflage~

Camouflage works in a different way for some predators. Instead of using their protective coloring to HIDE, they use it to ATTACK! Isn't it easier to surprise someone if they can't see you? If you've ever seen a cat crouch down really low before it is ready to pounce on something, you know how important it is NOT to be seen when sneaking up on something.

This picture was taken from Hiding Out, written by James Martin, photographed by Art Wolfe, 1993.

This big cat, called a lynx, is getting ready to pounce on its prey. See how it blends in with the tree it is hiding in? This way, the unsuspecting rabbit or bird below will not be able to see him until . . . IT IS TOO LATE! If the lynx wasn't able to blend in with its surroundings, food might be able to escape before he could get to it. The color of the lynx's body helps him stay alive.
