The Process

Step 1: You will be assigned one of the four roles by the teacher.

• Sport Investigator: Your job will be to research sports in Ancient Greece using the Internet and your history textbook.  Your focus will be on the types of sports, role of sports in the culture, and the Olympics. 

• Architecture Investigator. Your job will be to research Ancient Greek architecture including its characteristics and famous buildings. 

• Art Investigator. Your job will be to research Ancient Greek art including characteristics and famous artists

• Religion Investigator. Your job will be to research Ancient Greek religion, its principles and major themes.

Step 2: You need to complete your individual research using the research handout as a guide.

Sport Investigator:

First, you must look and observe the object.  You know that it is somehow related to sports, but how?  Is it a piece of a sports equipment? Is it a piece of uniform?  Or is it a game admission ticket?  Use this website:  Greek Games from http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/greeks/games/index.htm to research Ancient Greek sports. Use this information to help determine what your artifact is. Use the research guideline worksheet to help you.

Architecture Investigator:

Your job is to determine where your artifact came from and what part of the building it may be.  What kind of architecture is it?  You may need to research famous buildings and characteristics of Ancient Greek architecture to determine this. Art Investigator:

Your job is to determine the significance of your artifact.  Describe major themes in Ancient Greek art.  Research popular painters or sculptures in Ancient Greek Culture.  Describe the role that art played in the culture of Ancient Greece. Use the research guideline worksheet to help you. Use the following websites:

Religion Investigator:

Your job is to research Ancient Greek religion, its role in every day life and major characteristics ( including places of worship and the gods that played a central role in the religion). Use the research guideline worksheet to help you. Also use these websites:

Step 3: After completion of research, your findings will be shared within the group.

Step 4:  Your group will analyze findings and create a final newspaper article that summarizes all information found.

Now that you have completed and organized your research,  as a group you are to write a newspaper article that brings together all of your research. The article should be designed as a breaking news story. You will describe the newly discovered artifacts and also tell readers their significance and importance in Ancient Greek culture.

The artifacts found are:

• A large wheel that seemed to be well worn and is gold plated
• A piece of a column
• A marble nose
• A parchment with lists of names, including Zeus, Hera, Apollo

Step 5: Your final product will be presented to the class.   Your group will present their research in the form of a newspaper article.
