Curriculum Standards
The Webquest deals with the following Virginia Standards of Learning:
USI.5 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the factors that shaped
colonial America by
* comparing and
contrasting life in the New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern colonies,
with emphasis on how people interacted with their environment;
* describing colonial life in America from the perspectives of large landowners,
farmers, artisans, women, indentured servants, and slaves
US.2 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the geography and early
inhabitants of Virginia by
* locating Virginia and its bordering states on maps of the United States;
* locating and describing Virginia's Coastal Plain (Tidewater), Piedmont,
Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau;
* locating and identifying water features important to the early history of
Virginia (Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay, James River, York River, Potomac
River, and Rappahannock River);
English 5.1 The student will listen, draw conclusions, and share responses
in subject-related group learning activities.
* organize information to present reports of group activities;
* summarize information gathered in group activities.
English 5.3 The student will make planned oral presentations.
* organize content sequentially or around major ideas;
* incorporate
visual aids to support the presentation.
English 5.7 The student will write for a variety of purposes to describe,
to inform, to entertain, and to explain.
* organize information;
* vary sentence structure;
* revise writing for clarity;
* edit final copies for grammar, capitalization, spelling, and punctuation, especially the use of possessives and quotation marks.
