Thomas Jefferson's Letter

July 8, 1776

My dearest Martha,

It has been two months since our last meeting. I miss you so. There has been a whirlwind of activity here in Philadelphia. It looks as though I will be settling here for quite some time. My portable writing desk is serving me well. I have been engaged in writing a document for our new formed country. It has been named the Declaration of Independence. Four days ago, John Hancock, the president of the Continental Congress signed the document and it was adopted by Congress. July 4 will now be known as Independence day for years to come. Today, it is being read to the public. This is a major turning point in the history of the world. We are breaking free of Britain's rule at last!

I hope all is well at my true home, Monticello. I am thinking of you always. Please give my love to Patsy.

Love,

Thomas
