The Process

In the following WebQuest, you will use teamwork and the many resources on the Internet to learn all about work, force, and motion.

Each person in your group will be assigned a different task to research. After the research has been conducted, you will need to report the information that you have discovered back to your group. Once each group member has discussed his/her findings, your team will brainstorm possible ideas in order to create an informative video on motion.

You will be one of the following experts:

1. Kinematics expert (master of speed, velocity, and acceleration)

2. Newtonian expert (master of Newton's three laws of motion)

3. Work expert ( master of the physical sense of work)

4. Applied forces expert (master of specific types of forces)

In order to complete this WebQuest, please use the following steps below of instruction.

Step 1: Video Example

Here's an example of a motion video already created for fourth grade students. Although the content may be more simplistic than on an eighth grade level, the video still contains creative examples of the concepts. Please take a minute to view the video.

Step 2: Become an Expert

Your teacher will now assign each group member to a specific role. Once you know which expert you will become, it is time to begin researching and exploring your topic. Use the following questions and web sites as a basis for your research.

Kinematics Expert
Newtonian Expert
Work Expert
Applied Forces Expert

Step 3: Share Your Findings

Once your individual research is complete, it is time to collaborate with your group members. Each expert should take a few minutes to explain his/her role and the important concepts that are related. Experts should make sure that each group member has a complete understanding of each topic. This understanding will be essential during the movie creation process. During the explanation, the experts should make sure that they discuss real world examples. Examples similar to these will be used throughout the video.

Step 4: Brainstorm Video Ideas

After each group member has discussed his/her findings with the rest of the group, it is now time to brainstorm the ways in which these concepts will be presented in a video. It will be helpful for the group to write a script, depicting the order and content of the video sequence. Additionally, group members should think of ways to demonstrate the forces of motion using everyday objects. This process may require your group to bring in specific props that will make the video more interesting to the viewers. The group also needs to decide which group members will help direct, act, and narrate throughout the production of the video. Lastly, you must get your teacher's approval of your script.

Step 5: Production Time

Once your script has been approved, it is finally time to produce your movie! The creation process should follow the information that you have included in your script. Make sure that your group uses your time wisely. If any problems arise while filming, make sure to ask your teacher for some direction.

Step 6: Group Presentations

After each of the groups have produced their videos, each group will then present their movie to the rest of the class. Before the presentations begin, it will be necessary for the groups to decide how they will introduce their movie. Each group member should introduce themselves, including their name and their expert role.

While each group is presenting their video, the rest of the class will be required to complete an evaluation. This evaluation will help identify what areas of the video may need to be revised before presenting the videos during the science fair. It is important to include both negatives and positives of each video.

Step 7: Final Cut

Each group should now review the evaluations that were completed by the rest of the students. Using the suggested changes, final revisions should be made to the video. It may also be beneficial to practice your group's introduction to your video.

Step 8: Science Fair is Here!!

It is finally time for each group to present their videos to parents, teachers, and students who are in attendance at the science fair. Remember that it is important to introduce yourself and the role that you played during this process.
