Music During the Civil War

Are you ready to become the music expert? Put yourself back in time to the Civil War. Imagine what it would have been like to experience the music first hand. Imagine yourself as a soldier. Think about what the music would have meant to you. Music today is used as a source of entertainment and enjoyment. During the war, music was used differently. The soldiers relied on the drummer boys and buglers to keep them marching in time, and to give the signals and messages.

Here is your chance to travel back in time to learn about how music was used by soldiers and civilians for release at the end of a long day, for jubilation during the good times, and for sorrow when there seemed to be no hope.

Using the above sites, it is your job to compare and contrast songs of the North and of the South. Investigate the melodies and the lyrics (words) to see what types of emotions they bring about.

It is up to you to decide exactly how you would like to display this information, but remember that it must be clear. Feel free to use any art materials that you think will enhance your product. Be creative!

Pretend you are a soldier in the Civil War and write lyrics that would share your feelings about the War. What are the most important parts of your life that you would share with others? What stories or hardships would you want to talk about? Maybe there is even one specific event that you can tell with your song.

For the exhibit, you need to have a banner or poster that displays your new lyrics and the name of your song.
