Biology

The Department of Biology offers students the opportunity to study science pulled straight from the headlines—cancer, AIDS, genetic engineering, biodiversity, air and water pollution, global climate change, emerging infectious disease and more. Students majoring in biology receive excellent preparation for graduate programs in all areas of biology and the health professions as well as an understanding of the way the world works that is relevant in every career field. In addition, students in other disciplines can choose to minor in biology.

Biology majors who are interested in going into medicine or other healthcare professions after graduation take advantage of the School of Arts & Sciences’ successful pre-health studies program. Some even add a minor in the medical humanities to complete their pre-health curriculum.

In addition to a rich and challenging curriculum, students studying biology find ample opportunities to apply the concepts they learn in the classroom to laboratory research they conduct with faculty members.  

Other opportunities for experiential learning include internships and study abroad experiences geared especially for biology majors who don’t want to get behind in their science courses while studying internationally.
