Sub-Free Housing

Popular culture may suggest college as an alcohol-filled party, but we understand that many students live a full, satisfied life without using substances such as alcohol, drugs, or tobacco. Thus, Westhampton College provides substance-free communities, environments where students come together and connect socially with other college students who have similar values regarding substance use in college. You may be asking yourself, “Shouldn’t all first-year housing be substance-free?”  The intent of these communities is to bring together women who abstain from the use of these substances in and out of their living environment.

Benefits of Participation

Living in a substance-free theme community enables residents to closely interact with others who are looking for fun activities, providing them with a built in social network.  Students who choose to live in this community will make a commitment to themselves and others in the community to abstain from the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and other substances.

Students living in sub-free take on leadership responsibilities and learn practical skills through the creation of and participation in a variety of fun, engaging, and enlightening social opportunities offered by fellow students, faculty, and staff. These activities, designed specifically to support residents in their sub-free approach to college life, focus on positive social interactions with peers. Residents of these communities play an active role in determining what the community will accomplish over the course of the year.

A Resident Assistant (RA) specifically selected to work with the community lives and closely with students. Professional staff members are also be involved in overseeing the community and promoting the holistic development and success of students.

Requirements for Participation

While everyone on campus must abide by certain guidelines, students living in sub-free housing sign an agreement to abstain from the use of substances and support other community members in their decision to live a healthier, substance-free life.

In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in community activities and events that connect them with like-minded peers and will assist in the development of standards that will contribute to the future of substance-free living at the University.

Women who are interested should indicate a preference for the Substance Free Community on their housing paperwork.  This does not require a separate application!
