Global House

Application for New Residents

Application for Returning Residents

Applications are due February 21, 2007!

The Global House at The University of Richmond is a residential program that seeks to create a environment where students can actively cultivate their interest in global issues and cultural diversity.  Residents will take an active role in facilitating cross-cultural understanding and respect and will seek to integrate their academic interest in cultural/international issues with their residential experience.  Further, the Global House at UR seeks to enhance the educational experience by providing a venue for faculty, staff, and students to interact outside of the classroom, thereby more closely connecting their academic experience with their co-curricular experience.   This community reflects the University of Richmond’s commitment to creating an educational environment that celebrates the unique contributions of each of its members.

To Achieve Our Mission/Vision, the Global House at UR aims:

  • To provide students with an opportunity to play an active role in their education both inside and outside of the classroom.

  • To provide students with an opportunity to develop cross-cultural understanding and communication skills.  Students will organize events (workshops, speakers, performances, social and outings etc…) that focus on issues of international and multicultural interest.

  • To connect students with faculty and staff by providing students with a faculty advisor (PCA and Faculty committee member) who assists in administering and mentoring the program.

  • To encourage faculty, staff and students to work together to develop programs that foster innovative and interdisciplinary learning experiences that bring the intellectual life of the University in close alliance with the students' lives outside the classroom.

  • To provide all students with an opportunity to interact with people of various cultural background and to analyze how everyone has a cultural lens that shapes behavior, self-perception and world views.

Expectations of Residents
Each student signs the following agreement:

"The undersigned hereby declares that by being selected to participate in the Global House program, I must participate in the following:

  • Attend a minimum of three Global House activities per semester.
  • Actively participate and plan programs for the House and for the University community.
  • Attend all Global House meetings.
  • Actively promote the Global House program to the University campus community.

I agree to maintain a supportive and enthusiastic attitude towards the program and its members. I will respect the other members of the Global House, including the Residence Life staff. As residents of the Global House, you are encouraged to include Global and cultural issues into any academic projects or research. Residents in the Global House should be regarded as a privilege, and as such everyone must work together to promote and maintain its upkeep.

My performance will be evaluated continuously throughout the academic year. If, after mid-semester, my participation as a resident is found to be unsatisfactory, I will be notified in writing by the Global House Coordinating Committee. Failure to perform within the terms of this agreement will result in my removal from the Global House."
