UR Honor Societies

Alpha Kappa Delta (Sociology)
  • declared sociology major
  • junior standing at least 60 hours completed
  • overall cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • overall GPA in Sociology classes (taken at UR) of at least 3.2
  • completed at least 4 courses in Sociology

Alpha Psi Omega (Dramatics)

  • must be at least a second-semester sophomore
  • must have made a significant contribution to dramatics at UR
  • must be in good academic standing
  • candidates decided by examination of quality of work and time spent on shows

Areopagus (English)

  • English majors who complete nine hours in English at the 200 and 300 level
  • must have a “B” average in English
  • must have a 3.0 GPA overall

Beta Beta Beta (Biology)

  • Associate Member - 3.0 GPA in 12 hours of Biology
  • Full Member - 3.0 GPA in 16 hours of Biology

Beta Gamma Sigma (Business)

  • for Business School members
  • limited to top 5% of junior class and top 10% of senior class
  • selected by faculty based on academic achievements and desirable personal qualities

Delta Sigma Rho - Tau Kappa Alpha (Speech)

  • at least 3.0 overall cumulative GPA
  • selected by current members
  • two years of collegiate forensics experience (e.g. debates or forums)

Dobro Slovo (Slavic Languages)

  • the student must have completed two years (or equivalent) of study of Slavic languages and/or literature, culture, or related subjects taught in a Slavic language, with minimum grade of 3.5/4.00 
  • a minimum overall academic average of 3.0 – 4.0
  • the student must indicate an active and continuing interest in studying Slavic languages, literature, culture, and related fields of Slavic studies 

Eta Sigma Gamma (Health and Sport Science)

  • 12 hours completed in Health courses
  • 3.0 overall GPA
  • 3.3 cumulative GPA in Health

Eta Sigma Phi (Classics)

  • nominated by professor based on academic merit
  • membership by invitation only

Gamma Sigma Epsilon (Chemistry)

  • 3.0 overall cumulative GPA 
  • 3.2 in all Chemistry classes
  • must have completed or be enrolled in a 300-level Chemistry course

Golden Key National Honor Society (Scholastic Achievement)

  • 3.3 cumulative GPA
  • must be a junior or senior
  • open to all undergraduate traditional and non-traditional students
  • membership by invitation only

Kappa Delta Pi (Education)

  • must have completed 50 hours of total credits
  • 3.0 overall cumulative GPA
  • ranked in the upper fifth of class
  • must have at least 12 hours of professional education completed or scheduled
  • intent to continue in field of Education
  • desirable personal qualities

Lambda Pi Eta (Communication)

  • must have completed 60 semester hours of undergraduate study
  • must have at least 12 hours of study in communication
  • 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • 3.25 communication GPA
  • be in good standing
  • display commitment to the discipline of communication

Mortar Board (Scholarship, Leadership, Service)

  • must be a WC or RC rising senior
  • 3.2 minimum cumulative GPA to be considered for membership
  • selected by members on basis of scholarship, leadership, and leadership

Omicron Delta Epsilon (Economics)

  • 3.0 overall cumulative GPA
  • 3.3 cumulative GPA in Economics
  • major in Economics

Omicron Delta Kappa (Leadership)

  • ranked in top 35% of junior or senior class
  • acquire points according to leadership and membership positions
  • selected by members of ODK and the advisors

Pegasus Society (Sport Science)

  • 3.0 overall cumulative GPA
  • 3.3 cumulative GPA in Sport Science
  • 12 semester hours in Sport Science

Phi Alpha Theta (History)

  • 3.0 overall cumulative GPA
  • 3.1 overall GPA in History
  • completed a minimum of 12 hours at 200 level or 300 level
  • not restricted to majors

Phi Beta Delta (International Scholars)

  • 3.30 cumulative GPA
  • US students who pursued academic studies abroad or have participated in comparable international programs or experiences approved by the institution
  • International students with junior or senior academic standing and at leasttwo semesters of residence at the University of Richmond

Phi Beta Kappa (Scholastic)

  • may elect 10% of graduating class and no more than 1% of junior class
  • restricted to Arts & Sciences and Leadership majors approved by national Phi Beta Kappa Society
  • cumulative ranking determined according to courses approved for consideration by the national Phi Beta Kappa Society

Phi Eta Sigma (First-year Scholarship)

  • 3.5 overall cumulative GPA in the first or second semester of the first year 

Phi Kappa Mu (Music)

  • must be at least a second semester sophomore
  • at least a 3.2 overall GPA in 15 hours of music courses (no more than 6 can be ensemble courses e.g. bank, choir)

Phi Sigma Iota (Romance Languages)

  • completed a 400 – level foreign language course
  • 3.0 overall cumulative GPA
  • ranked in top third of class

Phi Sigma Tau (Philosophy)

  • junior or senior standing 
  • 3.0 overall GPA
  • completion of at least nine hours in Philosophy above the 200 level
  • GPA in Philosophy of at least 3.2 (if a major) or 3.5 (if not a major)

Pi Mu Epsilon (Mathematics)*

  • 3.0 overall GPA
  • 3.0 average in math courses numbered 235 and higher and completion of at least one 300-level math course
    *Separate requirements for first-year students and sophomores

Pi Sigma Alpha (Political Science)

  • 3.3 overall cumulative GPA
  • 3.5 overall GPA in Political Science
  • 18 hours completed in Political Science at University of Richmond, at least 9 hours at the 300 level

Psi Chi (Psychology)

  • ranked in top 35% of student’s class
  • 3.0 overall GPA in Psychology courses
  • completion of at least nine semester hours of Psychology

Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish)

  • completion of 18 semester credit hours (University of Richmond language requirement counts as 12)
  • GPA of 3.0 – 4.0 in all Spanish courses taken
  • rank in the upper third of student’s class
  • completion as of the end of the semester of Spanish 301 or 305 and one three-hour course in Hispanic literature or culture at the 300 or 400 level

Sigma Pi Sigma (Physics)

  • completion of at least one 300-level physics course
  • 3.0 GPA in physics
  • 3.0 GPA overall

Theta Alpha Kappa (Religion)

  • must have taken at least 12 hours in Religion
  • 3.5 overall GPA in Religion
  • 3.0 overall cumulative GPA
  • must have completed 3 semesters at University of Richmond
  • must be ranked in the upper 35% of class

Women's Studies Honorary Society (Women's Studies)

  • 3.0 overall cumulative GPA; 3.2 GPA in Women's Studies
  • must be a Women's Studies major
  • must have taken at least 15 hours in Women's Studies
  • must be a junior
